Whodathunk that on the year of the rain, the biggest shiitake harvest yet has surprisingly been fueled by last week’s hot and dry temperatures (awakened by the flash of cold weather the week before). Still some pickings left so call for your dibs now or hope there will be more over the next month or so.
Monday September 25th I will be speaking at a certificate presentation for my nominated and often-blogged about 102-year-young role model whose 2 massive nut trees planted 70 years ago are now designated as heritage trees by Forests Ontario. Keep an eye out for the article in your Town of Blue Mountains media outlets.
Speaking of nuts, I will be harvesting lots of heartnuts this year. Fresh heartnuts have a creamy coconut taste that dried heartnuts no longer have. Ask me for a special taste of these fresh specimens while we’re still nutting.
